Feudalism, also known as the feudal system, was a combination of the legal, economic, military, and cultural customs that flourished in Medieval Europe between the 9th and 15th centuries. Feudalism, historiographic construct designating the social, economic, and political conditions in western Europe during the early Middle Ages. Feudalism is a label invented long after the period to which it was applied, referring to the most significant and distinctive characteristics of that era. Although decentralization of the Carolingian Empire was the impetus, the feudal system came into focus during the 8th Century AD. (“Feudalism” is simply a term historians invented around the 17th Century to label a social structure they otherwise couldn’t define in one word.)
